Our History

The story of the Bydand Stock horse goes back to Scrumlo where the breed starts with the Mackay family who became owners of Scrumlo in the 1880’s. F.K. Mackay built a homestead and infrastructure at Davis Creek in 1926. His grandfather lived at Cangon, Dungog and his father W.H. Mackay lived at Anambah, West Maitland.

He oversaw a large pastoral business from Scrumlo. He needed tough, tractable horses that could stand up to a day’s work in the mountains. Alan Ward and Bert Griffith where two outstanding horse men who lived at Scrumlo in the 1940’s and 50’s. They amongst others helped to mould the Scrumlo stock horse.

Dan and Anne Lee-Warner with family settled at Scrumlo in 1955. Anne inherited Scrumlo from her uncle F.K. (Darby) Mackay, Dan Lee-Warner gradually took over the management of the horses. He bred and sold the stallion Scrumlo Victory. His eldest son took his share of the Scrumlo horses in 1992 which created a new era as he established the Bydand prefix and he now operates and owns all horses under. Today the business 'Bydand' consist of two properties Bydand and Scrumlo West, originally part of Scrumlo. William, Mack’s son now look’s after the management of these horses.
